 Oxfordshire Winter Leagues Division 3 (Jan-Apr 2019)

The fixtures for 2019 are listed above, please come and support your team for the home matches! :-

HOME; THURS 10 JAN 19.30 v Witney 2nd team - The inaugural 3rd team began with Witney, starting with Dave Cunningham at 5 and Rudi Du Plessis at 4. It was a cold night and it was fair to say that Rudi never really warmed up. He put in a good effort but never quite had the consistency against a good opponent. Dave, recently returned from an extended holiday Down Under, had a great match and lost narrowly 3-2 in a match that could of gone either way. Gary Treanor returned to team squash after a layoff from injury and put in a great performance to win 3-0 with a confident display. Nick Mullis playing his first ever team match lost 3-0 with a very credible performance, he will improve with experience. Martin H led from the front with a narrow 3-2 win to make the overall score 8-15 to Witney. A solid start that could have gone either way.

AWAY; TUES 15 JAN 19.30 v Banbury 2nd team - Our second match showed a change in teams as Dave C went off on an extended holiday and Rudi’s unable to play due to lack min circumstances. So in came our Membership secretary, Simon Horwood at 5 and the old fox Martin Kapusniak at 4. Both started with 3-0 wins against wily opponents, some good movement from Simon showing his range of shots, with Martin using all his craft and experience to win. Gary had a tough game at 3 and despite playing well couldn’t quite turn this into game points. Nick built on his performance from the previous week to show great character and skill to beat his opponent 3-1 in a very tight match. Martin gained his second 3-2 win in a feisty match that saw both players fall and some tight calling. A good 16-6 win overall.

HOME; THURS 24 JAN v Gladiators 1st team - Our 3rd round match was against Gladiators, with Oli being blooded at 5 for his first match. Oli is our first Junior to come through our coaching program to play for our teams. First up was Nick at 2 and Gary at 3. Nick had an extremely close match and very narrowly lost 3-2 (last game was 17-15). Gary was up against the demon lobber Caroline and although he lost 3-0 held his own against the high balls. Next up was Rudi at 4 and Oli at 5. Oli played well to go 2-0 up, his second game was 22-20 and he saved game points. He lost the next game as his opponent changed tactics. Meanwhile Rudi went 2-0 down with some very close games. Just as we started the next games disaster, the lights went out. A local power cut put an end to the match and under the Oxon rules we had to forfeit the remaining games. A tough night losing 4-19.

AWAY; THURS 31st JAN 19:30 v Hithercroft 2nd team - due to snow this match is rearranged for Thurs 18th April.

AWAY; THURS 7th Feb v Nuffield Health 2nd team -

HOME; Thurs 14th Feb v Racquets 3rd team - Our trip to Racquets started with a ‘win’ as they only had 4 players. This was our first outing in our new kit and Andy Bright our club chairman joined us for our team photo. Oli started us off playing 4 and had a good start against Juan (playing at 4!) getting to 1-1. He eventually went down 3-1 and Juan’s superior fitness told. Rudi had an excellent match narrowly losing 3-2 on a court with half of the lights missing. Gary played well for his 3-0 loss the score not reflecting the closeness of the game. Martin finished off with a 3-1 win to sign off a 9-14 loss.

AWAY; Tues 26 Feb v Witney 2nd team -  Our round 8 match against a side whom we lost to 3-2 at home. We started with numbers 1 and 2 on court. We had a new number 1, Tim Melvin, who showed his class by winning 3-0. Martin H played at number 2 and narrowly lost 2-3 in a match which went to 14-14 in the 5th. Martin K lost 3-2, having been 2-0 up, a good comeback by his opponent. Gary T won 3-1 a gritty display with some good squash. Simon H lost 3-1 to a very experienced touch player who although he didn’t move much, had some excellent shots. Overall a 11-15 loss, with some good points picked up across the match.

HOME; Thurs 7 March v Banbury 2nd team - Our strongest line up for this match saw Rudi playing at 5 and comfortably winning 3-0 to start us off with a win, his control and movement proving too much for his opponent.. Gary played well for his 3-0 win against Lesley with a solid performance using his power and direction to good effect. So 2-0 up. Next on was Ed, playing his first team match for the 3rds, and Nick playing at number 3. Ed ‘s match was close to start off and Robin took a 1-0 lead. Ed’s movement and power gradually told and after a close second game he dominated the match to record a 3-1 win. Nick had a great match against Chris with both players movement and agility on display. At one point we wondered if we would need to access the CPR course taking place next door. Nick eventually lost 3-1 after a sterling effort. With the team win already recorded Martin stepped on court against Andrew. It was clear from the start that this wasn’t a spectator event with rallies very short. Martin held out 3-0 and the longest rally was 4 stokes! Overall a good second win 17-5.

AWAY; Thurs 14 March v Gladiators 1st team - This was the return fixture for the abandoned home fixture which was cut short by the power cut. First up Oli was on at number 5 in a rematch against Richard after Gary pulled out late with an injury. A great match with Oli playing really well against a wily opponent. He had 3 match points in the 4th game coming back well from 14-9 down but couldn’t quite get over the line, eventually losing 3-2. Martin playing at 2 scored a good 3-1 win with the first 3 games being very close. Next up were Rudi and Nick. Nick had a close game going 2-0 down but coming back strongly in the 3rd. The game was played at a brisk pace and both opponents were puffing. Ultimately Nick lost 3-1, a good match to watch. Rudi was playing another Martin who was a strong number 4 and lost 3-0. Some good play here from both players. After his win last week Ed was at number 1 again. He played admirably against a strong number 1 who was the fitness instructor for the centre. Some great squash to watch with some long rallies. Ed succumbed 3-0 to a strong opponent. So a 17-6 loss for Brackley 3.
